Up for sale is a true centerpiece for any serious European military arms collection: an original, unconverted French Fusil Modèle 1866 "Chassepot" bolt-action needle-fire rifle.
Manufactured at the renowned Manufacture Nationale d'Armes de Saint-Étienne, this rifle is a phenomenal survivor of the early French Third Republic, produced immediately following the Franco-Prussian War. What makes this specific rifle exceptionally rare is that it was never converted to the 1874 Gras metallic cartridge system. It remains in its original 11mm combustible paper-cartridge, needle-fire configuration. Finding an unconverted Mle 1866 is incredibly difficult, as the vast majority were updated by the French military.
Adding to its extreme collectibility, this rifle features matching serial numbers (N 91224) across the barrel, receiver, barrel, and stock.
Condition Report: This 154-year-old rifle is in highly desirable, untouched collector condition.
Metal Finish: The metal has aged to a very honest, even brown/grey historical patina. The arsenal stamps, including "St. Etienne Mle 1866" on the receiver and the "S. 1872" barrel date, remain clear and legible.
Wood Furniture: The walnut stock is in excellent shape for its age, free of major structural cracks. Most importantly, it retains a highly legible original French military acceptance cartouche (the "Macaron") on the right side of the buttstock, clearly reading "R.S. September J. 1872".
Mechanics: The bolt action functions correctly. As an original needle-fire gun, the internal firing needle and original rubber obturator are incredibly fragile historical components; while present, we advise the winning bidder to handle the bolt internals with extreme care to preserve their historical integrity.
